Work by my High School Black and White Film Students, March-May2020
The last black and white film assignment we had before the pandemic was declared was a still life photo. After lockdown and I digitized the students' negatives and displayed them in a temporary Instagram gallery. I usually show student work in our physical gallery at school and wanted to provide some continuity to the rhythm of creation and presentation that takes place over the school year.
The second set of images was a photo essay assignment shot on cellphones that illustrated their experience of life on lockdown. The final 10 image set were edited to be black and white images--a visual and conceptual framework that allowed the cell phone essay to be integrated into the year's learning. Finally, the students wrote short descriptions for their essays.
